#14126 - Original Murphy & Griswald (NY) Bummers Cap kepi in Very Fine Shape
This is a Civil War era "bummers cap" type kepi made by Thomas Murphy and William Griswald and Company of New York. They manufactured 583,000 forage caps from 1862 to 1865. It is in amazing shape with only a few tiny moth holes and roughness of inside headband areas. These were most often eaten-up by voracious moths over the decades. But this one is solid with minimal time effect. The blue material still supple and having great color. The brim is attached and intact. Two General Service buttons hold the chin strap. Stitching tight. Inside there is the maker's tag, with "M & (G) / No. 3 / N.Y." on it. (see photo). This item can be handled carefully, but I would not wear it, or put it out where moths can get it. This is like filet mignon to moths! And so far it has been teasing them. It therefore comes in a free display case of clear poly sheets upon a wooden base. The rear panel is mirrored to see kepi's backside. Bugs cannot get in it and therefore, it can be kept safely on a shelf. (Avoid glaring bright light which could fade the blue over many years) So here is your chance to own a Union kepi in great condition. Was acquired 8 years ago from a major Midwestern military dealer and held in our Museum Inventory; but now we need to give it a new home. Shipped only in USA fully insured. See all 11 photos. Email me any questions.
Condition: Very Fine  |  Price: $2,750.00
