#17258 - Two Officer Inscribed Artillery Manuals 1862 1863
These are two military Heavy Artillery manuals of Rhode Island Lieutenant Rowland R. Hazard. He started serving in April 1861 in Co.G. of 1st Rhode Island infantry militia. We obtained a large collection of his insignia & military books from the Civil War. He later served in the 14th Heavy Artillery in New Orleans Theater as an officer in a "colored" regiment. Both of these are ink inscribed by Rowland in the fly leaf fronts. They have gold embossed cannons on covers and are for Heavy Artillery Training of officers. The first: "Manual for Heavy Artillery for the use of volunteers" published by D. Van Nostrand (New York) 1862. 72 pages. About 7 1/2 by 5". There is water staining and edge damage to cover. And 10 of the 72 pages have mouse gnawing at a corner. Still nicely inscribed book. Second: "Instruction for Heavy Artillery" by D.Van Nostrand (New York) 1863, pp. 254, about 7 1/4" by 5". It has water damage to cover and leather loff off outer spine, likely from attic mice. Ink inscribed by Lt. Hazard in two inside locations. Has 39 neat engraving plates at rear section. Both of these books for one price. Though have damage, they are personally inscribed with officer name & regiment, plus lots of good artillery reading.
Condition: good with damage to each  |  Price: $175.00

Binding is in good shape but about 1” is exposed on the spine, corners bumped and some edge wear. A prior owner penned his name in the front fly leaf in fancy ink, looking like Ellis Burgis Fairfield. Great research project! 282 pages.

#16136 - 1855 (1840) Scott Infantry Tactics III book
This is an original 1855 edition by Harper & Brothers of Major general Winfield Scott's 1840 Infantry Tactics III manual. The same old war horse who started leading the Union briefly in the Civil War! The book lost it's spine cover in past, so it now has b;lack book tape adhered there for stability. Still a few pages are loose. There are a number of maneuver's & formation fold-out graphics. An old newspaper article General Ewen's Fourth Brigade parade. Worn but interesting. Less common than later Civil War editions.
Condition: Good with spine tape  |  Price: $90.00

#16133 - 1830 Infantry Tactics Book pivotal pre-Civil War era
This is an original bound 1830 "Abstract of Infantry Tactics, for Light Infantry & Riflemen." Approved 1829 by War Department, this copy published 1830 in Boston by Hilliard, Gray, Little & Wilkins. It has a worn brown cowhide leather cover with intact spine. Has 135 pages and a number of troop maneuvers & formations illustrations. Once owned by State of Maine but no soldier's exact name in it. An uncommon dated Tactics book in that pre-Mexican War era. Older officers in Civil War could have used this as academy students.
Condition: Very Good  |  Price: $135.00

#16127 - 1865 Caseys Infantry Tactics of Lt. Chas. Tomes 84 NY
This is a well-worn copy of Casey's 1865 Infantry Tactics III book. It was the property of 21 year old Lt. Charles H. Tomes of the 84th New York Regt. as inscribed in pencil on front leaf. He survived the war. The book has worn edges and is missing the spine cover. But all pages still bound. A couple pages inside are torn. But majority of book intact. Nice eagle embossed on covers. A very worn and damaged book, yet ID'd to a NY officer who studied tactics from it during the Civil War.
Condition: Good with damage  |  Price: $108.00
