#7671 - March 1861 New York Herald paper during Seccession
This is an original copy of the New York Herald newspaper from March 18, 1861. The nation was in an uproar as southern states seceeded in rapid order that month. Virginia had not yet gone. Attack expected soon on Sumter. Debates in congress. Ships and forts were under siege and changing hands. Talk of Emancipation. Flags of Rebel South Carolina shown! All very interesting articles concerning flury of anxiety & confusion as Union crumbled prior to actual military assault on Fort Sumter in April. This paper is also loaded with ads & local news. It is 8 pages. It had been bound into a book but has since been split back-up into individual issues. Thus, the left margin is very rough and tattered to edges of text where it was stitched & glued. The left margins of opposing pages are separated, making 4 sheets of it. Has some very small tears which have been joined with a clear archival cellulose tape. This is good to read or to later frame. One page is 22 1/2" by 15 1/2".
