#5338 - CW False Embroidered Brass Kepi Horn
This is a die-pressed brass infantry hunting horn insignia for the cap of the Union officer during the Civil War. Rather than buying custom-made cloth devices which did not hold up to the weather as well as metal, officers could purchase these "false embroidered" brass ones from military supply houses. Their design looked a bit like the fancier hand-sewn or embroidered kepi horns. This does not have any attachment wires or loops on the back. It may be a CW surplus item later sold by Bannerman's and other historic military supply houses to CW vets and later collectors. It has a slightly toned brass patina overall with a little darker brown toning along bottom edge. A great condition officer's variant. These are getting harder and harder to obtain these days! (I only have two left and then they're gone!) About 3" long by 1 3/4" high.
