#4407 - 1867 Reconstruction: Charleston Daily Chronicle
This is a very interesting original newspaper from post-Civil war "reconstruction period" dated February 2nd, 1867. It comes from Charleston, South Carolina and is chaulk-full of local news, product advertisements, elixirs, death notices, politics and local departures of steamboats going every which way! The pages are a large 26" by 18" and printed on rag paper of the era (which does not deteriorate of badly yellow like our modern wood pulp papers...) It is fantastic reading from a period of healing just after the war when political and psychic wounds still ran deep in the face of a spunky American hopefulness. Don't pass this by! Has some tiny edge tears from having been bound along one side in past. No major tears or stains. Four big pages.
