#3314 - Civil War Paper: The World 1/12/1864: Scalpings!!!
This is an edition of the New York "The World" newspaper, with eight folded large pages, it was a popular daily publication priced at Three-Cents. It was still made on rag-based paper, so it does not rot or heavily brown like our modern pulp papers. It does have some light foxing or age spoits with minor edge nips and crinkles, but overall, is a solid piece suitable for your files or for wall framing. There is always news of the war, political news, events in New York City such as theaters and shows, classified ads and very cool product ads with current prices. Always fun and interesting reading! Great for students doing projects! In this issue: War in Virginia, Siege of Charleston, a very-disturbing "matter of fact" report how a detachment of US Troops volleyed into two Sioux lodges, killed the Indians as they came out, out because it was "too dark to discriminate" also scalped a boy and a squax with three males, bringing back the Indians scalps! (I will comment no further lest I risk some ire...)
